A glance at Friday’s matchup between the Houston Tigers (1-4, 1-2 SCA) and Ava Bears (3-2, 1-2 SCA):

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S OPPONENT: Ava improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the South Central Association with a 38-0 victory last week against Salem. …The Bears broke the game open by scoring 19 points in a nine-minute stretch as a 12-0 halftime lead ballooned to 31-0. Quincey McDonald returned two interceptions for touchdowns during the stretch. …McDonald leads the Bears’ offense with 65 carries for 380 yards and seven touchdowns. …Sophomore quarterback Caleb Johnson is 14-for-36 passing for 281 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He is also second on the team with 41 carries for 187 yards and two scores. …Ava has won the last seven meetings with Houston. The Tigers last won 27-25 in 2008. …HHS coach Eric Sloan said Ava’s main offensive weapon is the option. “It’ll have to be fundamental defense,” he said. “You have to do your job. If you try to do somebody else’s job, they’ll exploit you.”

TIGER TIDBITS: Chance Hunter is 50 yards behind last year’s pace when he ran for 1,036 yards. He has 466 yards through five games in 2016 compared to 516 at the same point last season. …The Tigers’ 40 penalty yards against Thayer were a season low –– topping the 52 in the season opener against Ash Grove. The other three games were 75 yards or more.
