50 YEARS AGO:
Texas County was well on its way to establishing a new deer kill record. After four days of hunting, Texas County was the leader with an estimated kill of 1,150.
Houston’s United Fund Drive went past the $3,200 mark, less than $800 short of the $4,000 goal.
The football season came to an end with a 19-13 victory over Salem. The season record was three wins and seven losses. Two Tigers, Ricky Ichord and Gary Koch, both juniors, were named to the All-Conference First Team in the SCA. Second team berths went to Don Romines and Jon Hutcheson. Leroy Motzkus received honorable mention.
Texas County delegates to the NFO state convention were Mr. and Mrs. John Forbes, Frank Rice and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Pottebaum.
In the Oak Hill community, Mr. and Mrs. Charles “Junior” Stockstill are constructing a new home.
At Plato, the PTA unit took advantage of the deer season by serving hot meals from four in the morning until eight at night on the opening day. The event was a financial success and the PTA will use the funds to carry out several community projects in northwest Texas County.
