A larger turnout than was expected filed to the polls in Tuesday’s election. The total county vote was about 3,500 with 140 absentee ballots. The only race was between eastern judge George Mitchell, Democrat; and Republican Nelson Igou, in which Mitchell was an easy victor. Democrat Mel Carnahan of Rolla, candidate for state senate, lost to Republican Don Owen. In a statewide race, Haskell Holman, Democrat, won the state auditor’s position over William T. Zimmerman. In another race, Richard Ichord easily defeated Ben Rogers for representative in Congress from the 8th District.

Elected without opposition on the Democratic Ticket were Earl Sponsler, state representative; Earl Cantrell, presiding judge of the county court; Earl Wilson, western judge; W.L. Shelton, probate judge and magistrate; Roy Gentry, circuit clerk and recorder of deeds; Millard Willson, county clerk; and R.M. Becker, prosecuting attorney.

H.D. Lee in Houston published a coupon the paper asking persons interested in working there to mail them to the factory. The Lee Co. stated it is interested in expanding the local facilities. If the expansion move is successful, the number of workers would increase to more than 400.

In football, Houston lost to Thayer, 34-6.

More than 40 senior citizens from Houston made a bus trip to Alley Springs.

Doug Overholser took first place Friday in the Federation Cross Country run in Springfield. A senior here, the 17-yearold runner holds the local school, the SCA and district record in the mile run.
