Cases update

A look at the status of several criminal cases in which Texas County residents were charged with major offenses in recent years. They are listed in alphabetical order. 

DANIEL G. CAMPBELL

•Case: Charged with first-degree murder and several other felonies in the November 2016 shooting in which one man was killed and another critically wounded, and more charges after escaping from the Texas County Jail.

•Status: On Nov. 28, Campbell, 39, of Success, entered a plea of not guilty on all counts and a trial date setting hearing was set for Jan. 17.  On Dec. 6, the defense filed for a change of venue.

•Location: Campbell is serving a 5-year sentence for first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle at Missouri Department of Corrections Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Correctional Center.

•Case: Charged with second-degree murder in the August 2011 shooting of his wife, Sandra, at a gas station in Cabool. Chapman was later apprehended in Colorado.

•Status: After pleading guilty, Chapman, 60, was sentenced on Oct. 2, 2012 to life in prison plus three years, to run consecutively.

•Location: Incarcerated at Missouri Department of Corrections Eastern Reception and Diagnostic Correctional Center in Bonne Terre.

•Case: Charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the March 2016 stabbing death of another man during a street fight at Licking.

•Status: Case was transferred to Maries County after defense filed for change of venue in June 2016. During a hearing Jan 4, 2017, a jury trial was set for May 9 in front of Judge William Hickle.

•Location: After having his probation revoked on several previous charges, Decker, 44, of Licking, is held in the Jefferson City Correctional Center.

•Case: Charged with hindering prosecution after being accused of assisting murder suspect Daniel Campbell in October 2016. Also charged with felony drug possession and misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

•Status: Lane, 37, of Licking, was eventually convicted on the drug charges and received a 5-year suspended sentence and three years of probation for the felony charge and a 5-day jail sentence for the misdemeanor (receiving credit for time served). He is a witness in the Daniel Campbell case.

•Location: Not incarcerated.

SEAN RIEF

•Case: Charged with involuntary manslaughter (vehicular, intoxicated), second-degree assault (operating vehicle while intoxicated resulting in injury) and driving while intoxicated resulting from a multiple-vehicle crash on U.S. 63 near Simmons that killed a Licking woman in a car and caused a Cabool man on a motorcycle to lose a leg.   

•Status: After pleading guilty, Rief, 28, of Bucyrus, will be sentenced in a hearing Jan. 17 in Texas County before Judge John Beger.

•Location: Incarcerated in the Texas County Jail.

•Case: Charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action after allegedly attacking and seriously injuring another man with a hatchet in a May 2016 incident at Licking.

•Status: On Nov. 14, 2016, Judge William Hickle ordered Smith, 19, of Houston, to be committed into the Missouri Department of Mental Health system.

•Location: State DMH system.

•Case: Charged with first-degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, four counts of unlawful use of a weapon and one other felony after being accused of shooting his wife, Courtney, while she was passed out in the bathroom of their Bucyrus home, and also firing several rounds into multiple adjacent residences in a January 2016 incident.

•Status: A trial-setting hearing is scheduled for Jan. 17 in Texas County in front of Judge John Beger.

•Location: Sprous, 31, is held in the Texas County Jail.

•Case: Charged with first-degree assault (serious physical injury) and armed criminal action after being accused of stabbing another man in a June 29 incident at a Main Street residence in Cabool.

•Status: Circuit Judge William Hickle on Nov. 14 filed an order for mental examination. Case review hearing is set for March 7 in Texas County.

•Location: Strube, 20, of Cabool, is held in the Texas County Jail. 

ROGER L. WAKE

•Case: Originally charged with felony terroristic threat after a November 2015 bomb threat at the Texas County Justice Center, Wake was eventually charged with misdemeanor making a false report.

•Status: After numerous filings and motions, Wake, 32, of Cabool, pleaded guilty to the reduced charge on Oct. 25 and was sentenced to 20 days in jail.

•Location: Not incarcerated. 

WILLIAM R. WOOD

WOOD

•Case: Charged with voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action after the August 2012 shooting of a 59-year-old man at Wood’s Carter Lane residence in Tyrone.

•Status: After a change of venue to Pulaski County, Wood, 40, of Elk Creek, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Dec. 4, 2013 to 13 years for the manslaughter charge and three years for the armed criminal action charge.

•Location: Serving sentence at Missouri Department of Corrections Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston.
