Children who wish to raise a dairy feeder steer for the 2017 Texas County Fair are encouraged to purchase the animal now.
Tiffany Hines said calves should be bought as babies on a bottle and must be Holstein in breed. No crosses or beef influence may be present or the steer will be disqualified.
The feeder steer category is for children ages 8 and older. This year’s event is July 26-29.
Hines said the feeder steers should weigh between 400 to 500 pounds at the time of fair. Starting as a baby on the bottle builds a bond with the child raising it, Hines said.
