Prior to hosting one of the biggest-ever events in Houston, the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds and arena will receive several significant upgrades.

As the main attraction of the 106th annual Old Settlers Reunion, the Traxxas Monster Trucks Destruction Tour is scheduled for two shows in the arena (on South U.S. 63) Friday, June 30, and Saturday, July 1. Before the big vehicles do their thing in Houston, the venue and adjacent grounds will be improved and be cosmetically more appealing.

Some of the planned upgrades:

•Six new light poles sporting 39 state-of-the-art lights installed outside the arena fence, replacing the old units that were inside the fence.

•The old wooden bleachers in the arena will be replaced with metal units thanks to a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

•The arena’s wooden fence will be pressure-washed and receive a new coat of stain.

•A new arena press box will be constructed.

•The fairgrounds’ badly damaged entrance and exit road will be resurfaced.

Arena light pole

Intercounty Electric Cooperative workers set a new light pole last Thursday outside the fence that surrounds the arena at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds.

On Tuesday evening, chamber board members and a few helpers gathered at the arena for a work party, performing tasks including removing dilapidated wooden bleachers, cutting tall grass, removing weeds and pressure-washing.

“I’m excited about this,” said chamber executive director Angie Miller-Quinlan. “This will be a big improvement for our whole community.”
