Lawson's walk-off slam wins opener

The Houston softball team was one strike away from losing its season opener.

But one swing from senior Madison Lawson turned a three-win deficit into a thrilling victory.

Lawson crushed an opposite-field grand slam over the right-center field fence Friday to propel the Lady Tigers to a thrilling 7-6 victory against Stoutland.

“I’ve never had that happen in 20 years of baseball or softball,” HHS coach Brent Hall said of the walk-off grand slam. “It was an exciting way to start the season for sure.”

Freshman Jaden Stell walked, Carly Crawford singled and with two outs, Taylor Chipps walked to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lawson fell behind 1-2 before the dramatic home run –– Houston’s first and only lead of the game.

Lawson also doubled and knocked in five runs. She had two of the four hits for HHS (1-0).

“She was putting good swings on the ball all day,” Hall said. “She came up at the right spot.”

The Lady Tigers host Alton at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday) in a game that was added last week to the schedule. The six-team Houston Tournament is Saturday. HHS plays at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in round robin play.
