Served since June 2008

Houston’s city clerk will leave at the close of business Friday after four members of the Houston City Council asked for a resignation during a closed meeting Monday.

Tonya Foster has held the post since June 2008.

City Administrator Tona Bowen said the resignation is effective Friday. Houston City Hall will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Alderman Donnie Wilson presented the motion to accept a resignation. He was joined by three other council members, Kim Bittle, Viki Narancich and Jeremy St. John. Councilwoman Sheila Walker was absent due to illness. Alderman Joe Honeycutt voted no.

There was no severance package paid, Bowen said. Foster left her job following the meeting Monday night. No reason was stated for the council’s move.

Bowen said she told Mayor Don Tottingham today that she will likely ask that Deputy City Clerk Heather Sponsler be added to financial accounts to allow the city to continue to do banking business.

Foster’s job will likely be posted Monday. No hiring timetable has been set.

A move to remove Foster failed in May when Wilson made the motion to terminate her, but it failed to receive a second, according to minutes. At the same meeting, Wilson, Bittle, Narancich and St. John lead a successful effort to fire City Administrator Larry Sutton. With the exception of Narancich, the three others began duties this spring after the April election.
