A grand opening for the Melba Theatre in downtown Houston is Sunday. Free concerts are planned, and tours will be given of the remodeled building.

Downtown Houston Inc., which spearheaded the effort, said improvements to the facility and two downtown buildings are nearly done. The Star Dramatic Co., a regional performing arts group, performed for two sold out shows last weekend. Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston sponsored the event.

Musicians from The Stars Foundation will appear with the Southern Ozarks Community Orchestra at 3 p.m. Immediately following, the STARS Foundation will provide an encore of its annual “Messiah” Christmas concert.

The Stars Foundation also announced a partnership with the Melba Theatre and Downtown Houston Inc. to provide management services for the Melba. “In keeping with our mission of ‘Studying, Teaching and Returning Service,’ we are looking forward to serving the Houston community at the Melba,” said Rebecca Peterson, who oversees the program.

The STARS Foundation is a fine arts school in Cabool and encompasses six counties within a 120-mile radius. The school fosters individual growth by offering music, dance, theater, art and languages, while at the same time cultivating self-confidence through hard work and dedication, Peterson said.

“As a non-profit, we are able to receive donations that are tax-exempt, write grants and give right back into the communities we live in. We are headed into our eighth year of serving Cabool and the surrounding towns, and have a huge year coming up with so much more,” Peterson said.
