While the Houston School District cannot release the punishment given to a juvenile student who last week threatened to carry out a shooting on campus, Dr. Allen Moss said student safety is a top priority.
Moss, the district’s superintendent, said school administration will following the policy outlined in the high school handbook after a 16-year-old male threatened a shooting during a planned walkout next month to bring awareness to school gun violence and legislative action. After a student makes threats or a verbal assault, the student is referred to the police department or juvenile authorities. The district punishment reads:
•First offense – 1-5 Days in school suspension, 1-5 Days out of school suspension.
•Second offense – 5-10 Days in school suspension, 5-180 Days out of suspension or expulsion.
The administrative staff has the authority to advance the student beyond the category where the offense would normally fall when warranted, according to the handbook.
“Student safety is our priority in this situation,” Moss said.
