Isaiah Buse and Kyler Ramsey rallied for a runner-up finish Tuesday in a four-team tennis tournament.

The Houston sophomores came back from a 5-2 deficit against their opponents from Salem in the final match to win 9-7. They were the lone HHS players to medal.

The tournament –– in 27-degree weather when it began at 8:30 a.m. –– was the first action of the year for the Houston tennis team. The first four matches of the year were postponed by inclement weather.

“It wasn’t optimal tennis weather,” HHS coach John Jordan said. “The balls didn’t bounce well, and we were all frozen. But give credit to the kids, we got it in.”

Buse and Ramsey won their opener 8-0 against Licking. After an 8-4 loss to Mountain Grove and needing a win to medal, the duo rallied past Salem.

In singles action, Grady Todd and Trenton Smith both went 1-2 in the tournament. Todd had an 8-1 win against a Licking opponent and Smith beat his matchup from Licking 8-2.

The doubles team of Kyle Mills and Elliot Clark were 1-2 with an 8-2 victory against Licking.
