Houston elementary and middle school were recognized on the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s 2018 list of “America’s Healthiest Schools.” The district achieved the Bronze Award for making changes that promote healthier eating and physical activity for students and staff.
This award was granted by Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program, an evidence-based national initiative to create healthier school environments where children can thrive.
Healthier Generation recognizes schools that meet or exceed stringent standards set by its Healthy Schools Program for serving healthier meals and snacks, getting students moving more, offering high-quality physical and health education and empowering school leaders to become healthy role models.
The award demonstrates the school’s commitment to fostering the health of students and staff. The district made environmental changes by adding water bottle filling stations in both buildings and updating physical education equipment. Both buildings have continued to provide before and after school programming with Tigers in Training and Introduction to Weights. Additionally, the district updated its wellness policy to increase PE minutes for elementary students and specific nutrition guidelines. Staff members have a variety of wellness programs they can choose from to improve their own health.
A celebration of the award is planned in August when students return to school. To get involved
