Summersville branch of the Texas County Library hosted the 5th Cowboy Roundup on Saturday. Always a big draw for the cowboys, the cowgirls also made a pretty good showing.

This year’s roundup included a best-dressed cowboy/cowgirl contest, sponsored by the Summersville Friends of the Library. Shelby Weisbrod, age 5, Mountain View, won for the cowgirls, and Tucker Purcifull, age 2, Houston, won for the cowboys. Each received a $10 gift card.

Austin Purcifull, Houston, was the main presenter and demonstrated some fancy roping skills for the crowd. Several of the visitors tried their own hand at roping.  They received roping tips to practice at home.

Gene Simeroth, Summersville Friends of the Library member, brought a handmade rope-making machine that many tried. Some left with ropes they had made themselves.

Organizers thanked Doreen Weise for providing rides on her horse for most of the cowboys and cowgirls. Christine Kateman and Kathleen Williams helped as her assistants.

A contest was held to guess the weight on the prized red heifer that was brought to the roundup by a local rancher. Actual total weight was 918 pounds,  and the closest guess was made by Zechariah McGregor for the $5 prize.

This year’s event was made possible by Texas County Library and Summersville Friends of the Library.
