Led by Mayor Don Tottingham, left, participants in this year’s first gathering of the annual Houston Mayor’s Walking Club head out for a stroll on an April evening from Rutherford Park in western Houston. Tottingham was dressed for a city council meeting that took place the same evening.

The fourth annual Houston Mayor’s Walking Club wrapped up with a meeting June 14 in the community room at the Lone Star Annex in downtown Houston.

Dubbed the “Healthy Food Healthy Bodies” meeting, the event was attended by 28 people involved in the club, including representatives of four of the 13 corporate sponsors.

“What a wonderful way to get to know the mayor and the community,” said the club’s volunteer coordinator Doris Scheuer. “We want to thank all of our sponsors for making it possible for us to provide T-shirts, the meal, lanyards, pedometers, schedules, advertising and walking schedules.”

Scheuer received a medal for her efforts. Several other people were recognized, including Mayor Don Tottingham for leading afternoon walks, Jim and Wilda McNiell for leading morning walks, Lee Smith for leading afternoon walks when Tottingham was unavailable and Elaine Campbell for helping with a variety of tasks.

This year, an average of 27 walkers participated.

“We know several probably walked who didn’t sign in on the sheet,” Scheuer said.
