The Houston School District notified the City of Houston it has no interest in a lot located near its campus.
Dr. Allen Moss, superintendent, notified City Administrator Tona Bowen late last week that the district won’t be seeking the purchase of the 4.25-acre tract that is bounded by Hawthorn and King streets.
Bowen said Moss told her community members had contacted the district about the property. He told Bowen he presented the idea to the school board, and they are not interested in pursuing it, regardless of price.
The sale of the property was discussed last week at a meeting of the Houston City Council. Neighbors and some members of the Houston Planning and Zoning Commission asked for additional information about a development that might include 12-13 structures that would be designed for assisted living or care of those with needs.
Bowen said Monday that the city is waiting on title documents and a final survey. No proposed purchase price has been released. She noted the city was making sure the purchaser, Scott Lauderdale, is aware of the ordinances and zoning for the Forbes property, which was acquired by the city in 2013 for $80,000. Another $25,000 was spent to remove two houses. Â
Steve Hutcheson, chair of the committee and a former mayor, asked the council to hold a public meeting, obtain an appraisal and study storm water and draining issues.
