Preliminary construction work got underway on the Brown Shoe Co. building on South U.S. 63. John Carson Construction Co., Springfield, is the contractor. Brown officials hope to have the facility under roof by the time cold weather arrives.

A contract to construct a new church for United Methodist Church of Houston has been awarded to Gentry Construction Co. The contract was for $136,857, and work is expected to start within 30 days. Site of the new church is the corner of Hawthorn and Dooley, property willed to the church by the late E.E. Scott.
