The Houston Lady Tigers’ first win was an impressive one.

HHS used a strong defensive effort Monday night to knock off Newburg – the eighth-ranked team in Class 1 – 44-38 on the road.

Senior forward Ally Morgan led three players in double figures with 14 points. Jaden Stell hit three triples en route to 11 points and freshman Hannah Dzurick scored 10 points in her first game after sitting out with a wrist injury.

The Lady Tigers (1-3) held Newburg to just three first-quarter points for an early 8-3 advantage. Houston led by just a single point entering the fourth quarter but managed to hold on.

“Every time Newburg made a run at us, I thought we did a great job of not getting rattled and making our own run right back at them,” HHS coach Jim Moore said. “It was definitely a team effort and gives us something positive to build on going forward.”

Playing another state-ranked team last Monday night, the Lady Tigers lost 64-24 at Licking. Morgan led the way with eight points.

Licking, the No. 3 team in Class 3, led 23-4 after the opening quarter. Karlee Holland scored a game-high 25 points.
