Loyd Leon Mitchell, 93, of Summersville, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2018.
He was born July 23, 1925, in Kansas City, son of George Washington and Lena Ethel White Mitchell. He and Mae Bond were married Nov. 29, 1949
He served in the Air Force from April 1, 1947, to March 31, 1950.
He served 46 years in law enforcement in Texas County, beginning as a deputy sheriff in May 1968 and retiring as a bailiff in April 2014 at age 88. He worked for six sheriffs during his time on the road before taking a courtroom position in 1993.
He served as Summersville City Marshall from 1970 until 1980.
He and his wife, Mae, were members of Praise and Worship Community Church in Summersville. He served as a deacon.
He loved gardening and raising flowers. He also enjoyed fishing. His greatest joy was playing and visiting with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ivan Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Mitchell of the home; a daughter, Pam Mitchell Powell of Summersville; two granddaughters; a grandson; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were Thursday, Dec. 6, at Praise and Worship Community Church with the Rev. Dorvan Stringer and the Rev. Pat Kaveny officiating. Burial with military honors was in Summersville City Cemetery under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home.
