Three organizations announced plans for a local meeting in preparation of the 2021 bicentennial of Missouri.

Michael Sweeney, Missouri bicentennial coordinator for the State Historical Society, will speak at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Melba Performing Arts Center on Grand Avenue in Houston. The visit is sponsored by Houston Community Betterment and Arts Council, Downtown Houston Inc. and Houston Area Chamber of Commerce.

This will be the only meeting in Texas County. Schools, teachers, community leaders, city and county members, business, clubs and organizations, museums, church and history buffs are invited.

Sweeney will share activities about many initiatives to celebrate the bicentennial as he works to lay the groundwork. The goal is make the bicentennial a learning experience to showcase the state’s history and its diverse communities and cultures.  He’ll also be at lunch at the Houston Senior Center across the street from the Melba.
