CLYDIE EVANS SR.

Clydie Evans Sr., who buried thousands while comforting grieving relatives, has died.

Mr. Evans, who for nearly 50 years operated the funeral home that bears the family name on Grand Avenue, was 87.

A Houston native who graduated with the Houston High School of 1949, Mr. Evans operated Evans Funeral Home with his wife, Jean, before selling the business in 2005. She preceded him in death in 2007.

In addition to his role as the town’s funeral director, Mr. Evans for many years operated an ambulance service before the county hospital assumed the role in the 1970s.

Always a booster for the betterment of his community, Mr. Evans had an entrepreneurial streak that he acquired from his father, Lynn “Shorty” Evans. The Evans family over the years was involved in several businesses — ranging from furniture to vehicles.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; and a son, Clydie “Bud” Evans Jr.

Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Evans Funeral Home. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the funeral home.
