A Houston man ended up with a pair of felony charges after a county deputy stopped last week to aid what appeared to be a stranded motorist.
Zachariah T. Sawyer, 20, of 674 Plainview Drive in Houston, is charged with delivery of a controlled substance (a class C felony) and unlawful use of a weapon – possess weapon and felony controlled substance (a class E felony).
According to a deputy’s report, the officer was patrolling in the Raymondville area and observed a black Pontiac parked on Farrell Drive with its hood up. The officer made contact with the vehicle’s occupant – Sawyer – and asked if he needed help.
During a subsequent investigation, a cigarette pack was reportedly found inside Sawyer’s right jacket pocket containing several small plastic bags containing a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. A glass smoking device was also found in his left pocket, the report said.
During further investigation by a pair of deputies, a Hi Point .45 caliber pistol was reportedly found under the driver’s seat. A black digital scale was also discovered.
The deputy noted in the report that a hatchet was lodged in the driver’s side door, and several knives were located throughout the car.
Sawyer’s bond is set at $150,000.
