Healthy Schools Healthy Communities will again this year will sponsor bicycle safety classes for local kids.
HSHC community wellness coordinator Earlene Stoops said classes for Houston Elementary School kindergarteners will take place Feb. 25, 26 and 27 and March 8 during regularly scheduled PE classes (from 10:05 to 10:55 a.m.).
Instruction will be provided by Delbert and Elaine Campbell. Others who will be on hand to help will be Stoops, Jen Russell and PE coach Boulder McKinney.
HSHC and the Texas County Health Department will provide students with helmets, reflective helmet storage bags and safety information packets. HSHC and its district Loran Richardson will provide two bikes for the classes, which will be given away to a pair of kids in a drawing at the conclusion of the classes.
The main goal of HSHC since it started in 2013 has been to reduce childhood obesity by 5-percent in five years.
“We are still working to provide ways to make it easier on our K-through-eighth-graders to be more active and eat healthy,” Stoops said.

Stoops said two planned activities for kids are a “Kid Tasted Kid Approved” event at the Cabool Town and Country Supermarket cooking classes at a future date.
