The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer a prescribed burn workshop for area landowners from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the USDA Service Center on South Highway 63 in Houston.

Attendees will learn how to set up and conduct a controlled burn safely.

MDC experts said prescribed burning is used to improve habitat for quail and other small game species as well as controlling weeds, brush and will help insure diversity of plants in the wildlife food chain. It is also an important tool used in maintaining and improving native grasses.

The purpose of the workshop is to help landowners evaluate when the best conditions exist and how to use them in a safe manner to achieve desired results.

The class will be limited to 25 participants. For more information or to register, call 800-879-8894, ext. 3 or 417-967-2028, ext. 3.
