The seasons for both the Houston boys’ and girls’ basketball teams ended in the first round of districts.

But first for the Tigers, they flirted with an upset.

Behind Clayton Moore’s hot start, No. 7 HHS led second-seeded Doniphan by as many as seven points in the first half. But the Tigers couldn’t keep the pace and eventually lost 51-37 last Wednesday in the opening round of Class 3 District 2 at Mountain Grove High School.

The fifth-seeded Lady Tigers trailed from the get-go against No. 4 Doniphan and lost 52-28 last Monday.

Both tournaments went to repeat winners.

Mountain Grove, the third seed in the boys’ bracket, knocked off Doniphan in the semifinals and upended No. 1 Licking 59-54 en route to the program’s fourth consecutive title.

The girls’ championship went to Licking for the third straight year as the Lady Wildcats downed Mountain View 62-51.

Moore led the Tigers with 21 points – 11 coming in the first 3 minutes, 40 seconds of the game. Junior Sterling Jackson hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 11 points off the bench.

In the girls’ game, senior forward Ally Morgan scored 12 points and junior Jaden Stell had 11.

The Tigers led by three after the opening quarter. The advantage grew to 21-14 when Moore and Jackson hit triples on consecutive trips for HHS.

But HHS scored just two points the final 5 minutes, 45 seconds of the first half as Doniphan rallied within one point and pulled away in the third quarter.

The Tigers finished with a 8-20 mark – their most wins since the 2010 season.

The Lady Tigers were 7-19.
