As reading week kicked off at Houston Elementary School, the family of former teacher Terisa Ward launched a program during an assembly last Monday in her honor. The “Terisa Ward Reading Challenge” was issued to each elementary student as 455 books were distributed in her honor. Students have until March 20 to read their book to be placed into a drawing to win one of 23 gift cards valued up to $25.

Ward, who passed away in September 2018, finished her career in Houston as a reading teacher and believed that reading was a vital part of all aspects of life. Books were purchased through donations to the Terisa Ward Education Memorial Fund.

“This will be an annual event in hopes that the children of this community will become great readers and have a successful future,” said Ward’s husband, Joe.

To make a donation to the memorial fund, contact Joe Ward at 417-349-1173 or visit The Bank of Houston.
