Three people lost the home and most of their possessions Thursday afternoon as a fire destroyed their house on Boster Road southeast of Houston.

Raymondville Fire Department Chief Mike Jackson said two trucks and four firefighters from his department responded, along with three trucks and seven personnel from the Houston Rural Fire Department.

But by the time the first set of responders arrived, the house was already fully engulfed and not savable. Jackson said firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby outbuildings and an unoccupied mobile home.

“We cooled the area,” he said. “We flowed about 3,400 gallons.”

Jackson said there was nothing suspicious about the fire scene, and that the blaze started on one end of the single-story structure and spread to the rest. The residents of the house – Mary Katherine Collins and her son Jonathan and daughter Katherine – were not home when the fire began.

“When you see someone’s life reduced to ash like that, it’s a bad deal,” Jackson said.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the victims.
