Cooking classes for Houston School District students ages 8-to-10 are scheduled for this summer.
The free “Cooking Matters” classes are a joint operation by the Texas County Health Department, Healthy Schools Healthy Communities (HSHC) and the University of Missouri Texas County Extension. They will take place at the community kitchen and dining area at the Lone Star Annex in downtown Houston from 2 to 4 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday from June 24 through July 10.
Participants must attend at least four of the six classes to qualify for a certificate and other prizes. Organizers said there is room for only eight kids and eight parents, and only one child per family can attend.
Food, a cookbook, a certificate, a cutting board and enough ingredients to take home to make at least one thing that was prepared during each session will be provided through a University of Missouri Extension grant called “No Kid Hungry.”
Photos taken and prizes doled out at the end of the classes will be sponsored by the health department and HSHC.
