Six members of the 2019 Houston baseball team were named to the all-conference team.
Sterling Jackson, Connor Wilson and Alex Castleman led the honors with spots on the first team. Jacob Koch was a second team selection. Braedin Groff and Cody Allen received honorable mention.
Jackson, a junior first baseman, led the Tigers in batting (.405), on-base percentage (.516) and runs batted in (28). He tied for the team lead with 30 hits and a pair of home runs. Jackson struck out just six times in 93 plate appearances.
Wilson, a junior shortstop, hit .333 from the No. 2 spot in the lineup with a .443 on-base percentage. He was second on the team with nine doubles and 22 runs scored. Wilson was successful on 12 of his 13 steal attempts.
Castleman, a sophomore utility player who was selected as an outfielder, led HHS with 12 extra-base hits while tying for the team lead in hits (30) and home runs (2). He ranked second in the lineup with a .375 batting average and .447 on-base percentage.
Koch, a junior, led the Houston pitching staff in wins (seven), earned-run average (2.20) and WHIP (1.33). He struck out 46 batters and walked 25 in 41 1/3 innings. The right-hander was the winning pitcher in the Tigers’ first district championship victory since 2007.
Groff, a senior, went 3-1 on the mound while striking out 46 batters and walking 35 in 26 1/3 innings. He allowed just 16 hits and had a 4.52 ERA.
Allen, a sophomore catcher, had 29 assists and didn’t commit an error. Offensively, he batted .200 with a .330 on-base percentage from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
Ava’s Thomas Emerich and Caleb Johnson were the co-players of the year. Ava’s Rex Sawyer was the coach of the year.
