Samuel Albert Carter III, born on August 23, 1951, died Wednesday, June 26, 2019, in Houston, Mo.  

Sam was a long-time educator, teaching English and social studies at the secondary and college levels in Florida and, in recent months, tutoring law school students online from his adopted hometown of Licking, Mo.  

Mr. Carter was born in St. Louis, Mo., to Samuel Albert Carter Jr. and Lois Edna Freeman Carter.  His father, Bert and his wife, Patricia Pearl Horn Carter, preceded him in death.  He is survived by his mother, his brother, Dan Carter of Nacogdoches, Texas, and his sister, Gaye McKean of Columbia, Mo.

Sam also leaves behind his beloved dog Koda, a 6-year-old Akita.  His friend and neighbor, Scott Paris, cared for Koda while Sam was receiving medical care.

Local arrangements were handled by Fox Funeral Home in Licking.  A graveside service was Sunday, June 30, 2019, at Sand Creek Cemetery near Sullivan, Ill., under the direction of Reed Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be left at www.foxfh.net
