Attendees of an event at Hamilton Native Outpost in September 2014 tend to a large batch of simmering sorghum molasses.

Hamilton Native Outpost (HNO) in Texas County will host an old-fashioned sorghum molasses making event on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Sorghum molasses was used as a sweetener many years ago before sugar was readily available. It’s made be pressing the liquid out of sorghum cane stalks.

Details:

•Event begins at 8 a.m.

•Potluck at noon (bring a dish).

•Bring sorghum recipes to share if you have them.

•Bring jars – there are never too many.

•Wear proper footwear and long pants.

•No alcohol or loose pets.

HNO is located at 16786 Brown Road in Elk Creek. From U.S. 63, take Highway UU east, then go south on Watson Road and east on Brown Road.

Event organizers said GPS might not be reliable, so don’t rely on it “unless you have extra time and a sense of adventure.”
