The Houston Rural Fire Department’s annual “Poker Run” fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Motorcycle riders who wish to participate are advised that the ride will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Pizza Express (on U.S. 63 next to Walmart) and conclude at the Houston Rural fire station on Walnut Street downtown. The entry fee is $20 per rider and $10 for passengers.
Cash prizes will be awarded, including $300 for best hand, $150 for second-best hand and $50 for third. Door prizes will also be given away, and items donated by area businesses, organizations and individuals will be auctioned off.
Two 9 millimeter pistols will be raffled off: A Smith and Wesson M2 (with laser) and a Glock 43X. Gun raffle tickets are available for $5 apiece or six for $25.
There will also be an old-fashioned pie and cake auction.
The raffles and auctions are open to the public and will start when all motorcycle riders are back.
Lunch and drinks will be provided to participants for no extra charge and be available to others for a donation.
The Poker Run is the only fundraiser conducted annually by the Houston Rural FD, and all proceeds go toward lifesaving fire and rescue equipment.
“It’s very important to our overall operation,” said department Chief Don Gaston, “and it really helps our ability to serve the community.”
