Houston is among communities that will participate Oct. 13-14 in the Missouri Community Betterment’s 56th annual fall conference in Mexico, Mo.

Houston is among towns competing in the annual contest among populations its size. Judges will make an onsite visit from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10. (today)

Last year, Houston won first place in its population category and first in the youth category.

Among projects to be highlighted before judges is an expanding Houston School District, a new water feature at Westside Park, the Houston Senior Center, a new sales tax for city fire, police and park services and the community’s participation in the bicentennial celebration for the state.

The town’s youth arm of Houston Community Betterment and Arts Council will also be highlighted.

This year’s conference theme is “Town Square Fair.”
