Piney River Technical Center in Houston will hold an open house Thursday (today) and registration as classes with Mineral Area College are expected to launch four days later.

The announcement is a big step for the center, which will operate on Spruce Street following renovations to a building owned by the City of Houston’s Economic Development Authority. Construction of classroom space was recently completed.

Rob Harrington, economic development director for the City of Houston, said several high schools in the area are also expected to participate in dual-credit classes at Mineral Area College. Eventually other workforce development classes — for high-demand careers —  will be offered under a partnership with Texas County Memorial Hospital and the Houston School District.

Students will be able to take a two-year program at Mineral Area College and complete their education with Drury University, which already operates in the center. Cox College also offers instruction.

The open house is 3 to 6 p.m. at 204 W. Spruce St. Application and financial aid support will be available.

The first block of eight-week classes begins Oct. 14 with general psychology and American history I. A book scholarship is available for those taking in-seat courses. Ten classes also are available online. A representative of Mineral Area College will offer parents and students help with financial aid paperwork from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10
