A Texas County man who is a convicted sex offender and recently moved here from Oregon faces a charge after being arrested inside the lobby at Houston Elementary School on Tuesday.
Bobby R. Helms, 34, of Highway Z in Texas County, is charged with failing to register as a sexual offender, a felony.
According to a report from the Houston Schools resource officer, Helms was in the elementary school lobby at about 9:40 a.m. and was subsequently arrested and taken to jail. The school officer also reported that information was received regarding a Texas County Sheriff’s Department investigation indicating Helms had also been in the elementary school lobby on Nov. 11 attempting to enroll his child. Helms reportedly came from Albany, Ore., and moved to a residence on Highway Z in November.
He is a level 3 sex offender, but according to the report, he had been failing to register with the sheriff’s department.
Helms is reportedly not the biological father of the child he was trying to enroll. After being jailed, he was turned over to the sheriff’s department in light of its investigation. He is held without bond following the filing of formal charges.
