During a ceremony Monday in the school library, HHS senior Dakota Burchett signs scholarship paperwork to play football at Evangel University in Springfield. Behind Burchett are his parents, Donnie, left, and Debra Burchett, and HHS head football coach Eric Sloan.

The football career of Houston High School senior Dakota Burchett isn’t over.

Burchett has earned a scholarship to play for Evangel University in Springfield beginning this fall.

A three-year starter for Houston at quarterback and defensive back, Burchett will be a wide receiver for the Evangel Crusaders, who are a member of the NAIA Heart of America Conference.

“It feels like something I’ve been working toward my whole life,” Burchett said.

“He’s wanted the opportunity to play for several years, so I’m very excited for him,” said HHS head football coach Eric Sloan. “He has a great work ethic, so he will come in and compete. It will be fun watching him make the transition into a wide receiver after playing quarterback the last few years.”

Burchett said that when he plays at the next level, he doesn’t expect things to seem all that different.

“No matter what level it is, it’s just football,” he said.
