During halftime of a junior varsity boys basketball game last Friday night in Hiett Gymnasium, Houston High School senior Sterling Jackson and principal Dr. Justin Copley had their heads shaved as the conclusion of a fundraising contest called “Hair’s the Deal” organized by the senior class to help cover the cost of a senior trip.
Participants also included HHS assistant principal and football head coach Eric Sloan, Houston Schools employees Alex Carpenter and Jacob Threewit, and HHS senior Hunter Stilley. All agreed to have their head shaved if they won, and thanks in large part to his iconic long locks, Jackson was the winner by a landslide.
The effort raised $1,268, and Copley decided to go bald, too.
“I felt obligated to support the cause,” he said. “There were several large donations for me to shave my head. And I guess I still have a little of the old military mentality in me; I will never ask someone to do something that I wouldn’t! Also, I saved 12 bucks on a haircut this month!”
Doing the head shaving was middle school and high school custodian Bobby Downey.
