The National Weather Service said even though temperatures are cooler, the air will remain dry and winds will create an elevated to significant fire danger both Wednesday (Feb. 28) ย and Thursday.

It said fires can escape control more easily and be difficult to contain, it said. Tuesday was a difficult day for firefighters as numerous calls were received. The largest in the region was in the Success area, which prompted a response from several departments.


From Tuesday: Windy conditions and low humidity have firefighters scrambling Tuesday afternoon across the county, authorities said.

Here is what is occurring:

โ€ขA downed power line caused a fire on Morton Road east of Houston that spread to hay bales. Intercounty Electric Cooperative Association reported 126 meters without service in the Houston area at about 4:30 p.m.

โ€ขA grass fire was reported on Highway 137 about two miles south of Raymondville.

โ€ขMultiple agencies, including Houston and Roby, were called a second time to a fire at 9122 Highway 17.

โ€ขA tree is down near the Howell and Texas counties line on Highway 17.

โ€ขSummersvilleโ€™s department was called to a grass fire at Highway 106 and County Road 427. Earlier a fire was reported on Highway O.
