The March 19 meeting of the Cabool Art Club was held at Cabool Methodist Church and hosted by Patty Parker-Burns, Bonnie Nichols and Vicki Woods. The meeting was called to order with a prayer by Shelley Travis, club president.
Felicia Ellis presented a program on the Art of Basket Weaving and led the members in each making a basket of their own with precise guidance from the preparation of cane reeds through the weaving steps from bottom to side construction and the finishing process. She explained basic designs and also how to utilize various materials, colors, wire, strips of cloth and wood to achieve a variety of unique features. For most members, it was their first experience with weaving a basket and it was impressive to see the cute baskets come together during the course of the meeting. Many thanks to Felicia Ellis for her excellent instructions!
Roll call continued the theme of basketry as members showed decorative and useful baskets brought from home. The reading of the minutes was followed with the treasurer’s report by Marie Beller and the report of the Courtesy Committee by Kathy Anderson. Lyn Santa invited everyone to attend the All School Exhibition showcasing the work of talented students in Kindergarten through 12th grade at the Springfield Art Museum which runs from March 2 through April 24. This highly anticipated annual show has been a staple of the exhibition schedule since 1932.
President Shelley Travis presented the Slate of Officers to be voted on at the April meeting. Arrangements were finalized for the Art Club members attending the Southwest Missouri Museum Associates annual Honors and Extensions Luncheon at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, March 27.
The Art Club voted to support the SMMA fundraiser and also beautify the Cabool Community by the purchase of geraniums for both the Cabool Library and the Kabul Nursing Home again this year.
As an added attraction, members were treated to a festively decorated dessert table with Easter flourishes and colors. Included in the delectable treats was a beautiful floral topped Basket Weave Cake, made by Tonya Skyles of Bear Creek Bakery, adding an intricate and tasty conclusion to the basketry program.
