The Houston R-1 School District intends to include a turf field with its April bond issue, pending final proposals and financing.

Following a special meeting Thursday, March 7, the board decided to start a 10-day bidding process with vendors. A board meeting is tentatively scheduled for Friday, March 22 for the board to finalize the bond.

“The board’s intention is to move forward with this project as a complete facility. Provided that the funds are available, we plan to have a turf field as part of the project,” said Jennifer Scheets, board president.

Additionally, the board decided that it would not enter into a letter of intent agreement with any vendors. The agreement would have required the school to put money down prior to the election. So far, only one vendor required the agreement.

Dr. Justin Copley, superintendent, shared with board members that a new vendor, GeoSurfaces of St. Gabriel, La., visited the campus for the first time this week and believes it can complete the entire scope of the project with the track and field within the $3 million budget. Copley believes the group will be among the vendors who submit a final proposal for board consideration.

During the meeting, the school board approved a bid presented by Walker Concrete in the amount of $14,280 for the construction of a ramp at the Piney River Technical Center.
