The Houston City Council decided not to enter into a lease agreement for office quarters Monday night with the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce.

The city has issued a letter to the chamber to vacate the building at 501 E. Walnut St. by Thursday, May 2. Ward I Alderman Kevin Stilley was the only dissenting vote.

“Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, the City of Houston is not able to enter into a contract with the chamber at this time,” said Mayor Viki Narancich. The action came during a closed session.

The chamber recently elected a full board and a permanent director was announced Saturday during the organization’s annual banquet. A lack of revenue among other issues have hampered the chamber, the city council was told during a February meeting.

“We have not been given a reason for the eviction at this time,” said the chamber board of directors.

In other matters, the council unanimously agreed to pursue Attorney Ivan Schraeder’s proposal to be presented to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). The city’s electrical department is attempting to join the organization.
