Texas County entered Sunday at the No. 5 position on the state leaderboard for the spring firearms turkey season.

Texas County hunters had killed 581 turkeys by early Sunday, according to figures from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

In the county, 469 adult gobblers, 106 juvenile gobblers and six bearded hens were harvested.

Leading the state were: Franklin (741), Callaway (644), Osage (619), Macon (592), Texas (581) and Miller (581).

Rainy weather Friday and Saturday hampered the hunt locally. Around 4 inches of rainfall inside Houston has been received with a forecast of more Sunday.

The season ends May 5.
