John Casey, a Republican candidate for Texas County associate commissioner district 1, shares information and answers questions before the August primary election.

Tell readers about yourself.

I bought my first farm in Texas County in 1975, where I ran a cow/calf operation. When I got approached to run for office in 2008 I wasn’t sure what a commissioner did, but was told I would make a good one based on my experiences, qualities and values. I am a family man who embraces conservative beliefs and family values. I have served two terms as president of the Sargent Township board, and was trained in all facets of the fire department and emergency management operations. I am also an experienced grant writer and certified arson investigator.

What prompted you to run, or rerun for this position?

When I first got elected in 2008, I served 96 days in office and I had a serious brain aneurysm. I was out of commission for several weeks. It was quite the experience, I received so many cards, letters, prayer groups and well wishes from people I didn’t even know. Since then, I have tried to work for and do the right thing for the people in the county. The experience I have seems to be brought up each election by several people and I keep feeling I need to do my part.

How do you plan to actively engage with our community throughout your term?

I would like to think of myself as active in our community. I am an active member of the Texas County Farm Bureau, Texas County Republican Committee and the local chambers of commerce.

What are your top three priorities for our locality, and how do you plan to address them?

Fight for property rights. Fight against any Jefferson City unfunded mandates. Keep an eye on pending legislation, good or bad, for the county.
