The Cabool Art Club resumed meetings after taking time off for the summer. The Sept. 17 meeting was at the festively decorated STARS Conservatory Community Room and hosted by Rebecca Peterson, Shelley Travis and Joyce Jones. The meeting was called to order with a prayer by Shelley Travis, club president.
Roll call highlighted the musical theme of the day as each member displayed a music box and other members guessed the tunes played. Many of the music boxes are treasured family keepsakes.
STARS Executive Director Rebecca Peterson treated members to a memorable experience by introducing several musical instruments. She provided close-up demonstrations adding to their knowledge and understanding of the necessary dedication and practice demanded of fine musicians.
Club members were shown how to properly hold many of the instruments as well as appreciate the level of concentration and the ability to focus on many things at the same time. STARS students are also taught how to tune and care for their instruments. Art Club members were given a much clearer view of what it takes to be a proficient instrumentalist. The presentation concluded with an invitation to attend one of the free Christmas Concerts showcasing the 80-member STARS Orchestra coming up on Dec. 1at the Melba Performing Arts Center in downtown Houston, Dec. 7 at the Civic Center in West Plains or Dec. 8 at the Ava Performing Arts Center, Ava.
The meeting proceeded with committee reports and the discussion of fundraiser possibilities for the club’s annual scholarship. Some of the members offered to explore the ideas in more detail and report back at the October meeting.
A motion was made and passed to send a donation to Southwest Missouri Museum Associates in support of the Springfield Art Museum.
The meeting adjourned to enjoy fall-themed desserts. Members present were Kathy Anderson, Felicia Ellis, Joyce Jones, Rebecca Peterson, Carol Pettijohn, Glenda Plumlee, Lyn Santa, Vanetta Sponsler, Shelley Travis, Tracey Trettin, Vicki Woods and Sari Wright.
The October meeting will feature “Wreath Making” with Lyn Santa.
