The Houston Herald is one of 205 news outlets across the nation that will receive a share of $20 million, thanks to funding from Press Forward, to reinvigorate local news.
“This is a huge honor,” said Isaiah Buse, editor. “It’s special to know that on a national level, the Houston Herald is seen as a leading independent source of local news.”
The Herald will be able to use the funding to continue to grow and improve its product offering. The outlet offers two print products, a continuously updated website, multiple newsletters, a large social media presence, livestreamed events and mass text messaging, among other things.
“We understand the importance of improving our digital offering and providing a top-tier printed product to our loyal subscribers,” said Buse. “This funding is wonderful news, but we need local support to sustain this work long term, and I’ve been fortunate to receive that support from so many individuals and groups in this area.”

Those receiving funds include newer nonprofits – some launched as information needs became evident during the pandemic – and enduring for-profits continuing to adapt and innovate after a century of business. There were over 900 applicants.
Of those selected, 25 percent serve rural communities. About 22 percent are situated in the Midwest.
