The City of Licking has hit a major milestone in a long-standing project to improve its water system. Bids totaling about $3.03 million were awarded Oct. 16 for the project that has been on the drawing board for years.

Members of the Licking City Council approved Caldwell Tanks Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky, to install a 150,000-gallon elevated water tank. The bid is nearly $1.6 million. An existing 50,000-gallon elevated tank will be dismantled.

The contract for drilling and casing a new well went to Flynn Drilling Co. Inc. of Troy. It will cost about $910,943.

A well-house project went to Midstate Pipeline Inc. of Belle at a cost of $527,880.

The action by the council followed approval of an April 2019 bond issue.

The city continues to study its water distribution part of the project. A bid has been received by Donald Maggi of Rolla. Finances will have a bearing on how the project proceeds.
