Texas County schools have about a month left to apply for grants to help cover the cost of propane school buses in Missouri.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is offering a maximum of $24,250 per bus for up to four buses. Schools must show an invoice or purchase order for the buses. The buses must have a propane drivetrain and be new buses that are properly outfitted, insured and registered. They must be purchased, not leased.

Applications are due Dec. 15, and awards are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

DESE has received 24 applications so far and 14 more are available, according to the Missouri Propane Education and Research Council’s news release.

MOPERC says propane buses are a sustainable and cost-effective option. The buses are “near-zero-emission,” and propane is non-toxic to soil, surface water and groundwater. Propane buses also start reliably in cold temperatures and have a range of 400 miles, according to the organization.
