Texas County hunters were nearing the 2,000 mark early Thursday morning for the fall firearms deer season, reports the Missouri Department of Conservation. That’s the second highest in Missouri.

By early Thursday morning, hunters had killed 1,817 deer in Texas County. Leading the state is Franklin with 2,173. Third is Howell County with 1,605. Other top counties in the state: Macon (1,584), Pike (1,542), Benton (1,461) and Jefferson (1,452)

The breakdown in Texas County shows: Antlered bucks (982), button bucks (153) and does (682).

The season lasts 10 days.
