A deadline is fast approaching for those who want to help financially with the construction of new Houston branch of the Texas County Library at First and Pine streets in Houston.
The last day to make a donation for the 2024 tax year is Monday, Dec. 30. State tax credits are available for qualifying donors.
The 7,200-square-foot building is slated for completion in summer 2025. It will more than double the floor space available to the main branch, which has sat at Walnut and First streets for more than 70 years.
Under the special tax break under the Neighborhood Assistance Program, eligible donors receive 70 cents credit for each $1 contributed off their state tax obligation and also receive some deductibility on tax returns. For many, the donation costs little and they get to direct their tax dollars to a local project. The credits can be carried forward for five years and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
