An inmate at the South Central Correctional Center died late Tuesday night, the Missouri Department of Corrections said.
Gary Merritt, 71, was pronounced deceased at a medical unit at the prison in Licking.
He was serving a life sentence for capital murder out of Buchanan County.
He had been in prison since May 1984.
An autopsy will be conducted.
