April is National ABLE to Save Month — a time to highlight the importance of financial empowerment for people with disabilities.
Here in Missouri, we have a milestone worth celebrating: the eighth anniversary of MO ABLE, our state’s tax-advantaged savings program designed specifically for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Since its launch in 2017, MO ABLE has helped more than 4,300 Missourians collectively save over $49 million — all without jeopardizing eligibility for programs like Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). That’s a remarkable achievement. As of March 2025, the average MO ABLE account balance now exceeds $11,000, showing that people can plan, save and build a better future when they have access to the right tools.
To mark this important milestone, Missouri is offering a special $25 match to new MO ABLE account holders throughout April. With just a $25 minimum deposit, eligible Missourians can open an account and start saving for a wide range of qualified expenses — housing, transportation, education, assistive technology, health care or job training. It’s a small step that can lead to big changes, especially with the tax advantages and flexible investment options the program provides.
Under current federal guidelines, individuals under the age of 26 with a qualifying disability are eligible to open an account. These accounts can be managed by the individual or by a parent, guardian or authorized representative, making them adaptable to each family’s circumstances.
Since I took office in 2023, we’ve seen a 46% increase in participation, which tells me more families are discovering how life-changing MO ABLE can be. These numbers reflect real progress.
MO ABLE is more than just a savings plan — it’s a declaration that all Missourians deserve the opportunity to live with independence and hope for the future. Financial freedom is the greatest necessity for bright futures, and programs like MO ABLE can turn that principle into reality.
